The terrorists were targeting United, American, Continental airlines, two U.S. counterterrorism officials say. One police spokesman said the attacks were planned to happen at the same time. The plan involved airline passengers hiding masked explosives in carry-on luggage, the official said. “They were not yet sitting on an airplane,” but were very close to traveling, the official said, calling the plot “the real deal.” A senior U.S. counterterrorism official said authorities believe dozens of people — possibly as many as 50 — were involved in the plot, which “had a footprint to Al Qaeda back to it.” (Fox News) 03:41 PDT
Well good morning world.
Are the arrests of the Dearborn men, who had airplane manifests and tracfones (which have been used by terrorists to detonate bombs) and the nationwide lookout of the missing Egyptians here a coincidence? Not likely.
I was thinking this very thing when I read Michelle's post.
Hot Air covered developments through the night. One word that you'll note that is missing from first coverage--well here, see for yourselves:
Sky News' Crime Correspondent Martin Brunt said those arrested were mainly young, British-born Asian men.
Update (Ian @ 5:18am): Metro Police official: “put simply this was intended to be mass murder on an unimaginable scale.”
Small off-topic thought here. It arrears Lieberman knew what he was talking about.
August 10, 2006 (2:40 a.m. EDT) – Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff announced a targeted raise in the threat level in light of today’s arrests in the United Kingdom. “The United States Government has raised the nation’s threat level to Severe, or Red, for commercial flights originating in the United Kingdom bound for the United States. This adjustment reflects the Critical, or highest, alert level that has been implemented in the United Kingdom. To defend further against any remaining threat from this plot, we will also raise the threat level to High, or Orange, for all commercial aviation operating in or destined for the United States.”

This isn't the first time for this plot, See-Dub reminds us. They just dusted off their old plans.
And he notes this.
Complete the series:
9/11
3/11
7/11
...?
How about 8/11?
I know 7/7 doesn't work, but mustn't stand on ceremony when you have people to kill.
