Expert slams MSM coverage of Lebanon-mentions counterfeit money
"Middle East analyst Barry Rubin has nothing but disdain for the Western media’s reporting on the region he has spent years studying. The story in Lebanon was the worst reported story I’ve ever seen.”
- There are so many inaccuracies… A lot of the reporters have no special knowledge
- He slammed the western media for accepting uncritically civilian casualty numbers provided by the Lebanese government.
- He slammed the media for under-reporting stories from Israel and for being taken in by concocted events in Lebanon.
- I feel we’ll find the whole Qana [incident] never happened.
- It’s easy to give people money if you printed it yourself, he quipped, adding that the media could have easily exposed the bogus relief effort had they chosen to.
"What does it matter if it is forged?
In The Jewish Week, out of NYC, there's this interesting perspective from inside Israel.
"Mordechai Kedar, a research associate at the Begin-Sadat Center for Strategic Studies at Bar-Ilan University, said ... said the speed with which Hezbollah began handing out American dollars to Lebanese who claimed their homes were destroyed in the war is a sign that “Lebanon is becoming more and more dependent” on the Iran-sponsored group.
Asked about reports that the money appeared to be counterfeit, Kedar said: “Iran is known to print American money to undermine the American economy. But if the money can cover the work in Lebanon in order to bring the houses back in shape, what does it matter if it is forged?”
Hello?
From the Begin-Sadat (BESA) Center for Strategic Studies website: Dr. Mordechai Kedar (Ph.D. Bar-Ilan U.) Served for 25 years in IDF Military Intelligence specializing in Arab political discourse, Arab mass media, Islamic groups and the Syrian domestic arena. A lecturer in Arabic at Bar-Ilan U., he is also an expert on Israeli Arabs.
The article talks a little more about the fragile cease-fire. Snapped Shot picks it up from there on the lifting of the Lebanese blockade.
Bombing Target. Bombing Suspect?
Samir Shehade, who has been investigating the killing of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri of Lebanon, survived a remote-controlled bombin attempt on his life. His guards and aides were killed. The Syrians have long been suspected in the assassination of the Prime Minister and are currently unhappy about border controls designed to cut off flow of arms to Hezbollah. LA Times
So, anyone got any ideas?
Kofi to Get Involved in Release of Israeli Soldiers
"U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan said Monday that Israel and Hezbollah have agreed to indirect talks for the release of two abducted Israeli soldiers and that he will appoint a mediator. " FOX News
Makes me think of a song I know...
JERUSALEM, Sept 4 (Reuters) - "Israel has asked U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan to help secure the release of two Israeli soldiers seized by Hizbollah, and not to mediate negotiations to free them, Israeli officials said on Monday. Annan said on Monday he would appoint a secret envoy to work for the release of the soldiers. 'A mediator is not needed,' an Israeli government official said. 'The U.N. resolution determines that the soldiers will be released unconditionally. The U.N. Secretary-General will assist and not mediate.' "
In other words, butt out.
