AFL-CIO to Petition U.N. Over Change in Work Rules
The WaPo reports that the AFL-CIO is going to the International Labor Organization of the United Nations about a decision this month by the National Labor Relations Board since they ccan't launch an appeal in our courts. The issue: "a federal decision redefining which workers are supervisors exempt from legal protection to join unions... nurses who regularly run shifts at health-care facilities should be considered supervisors and exempt from federal protections that cover union membership."
I get so tired of this "international court" business. WHITUS-SITUS. What happens in the United States, Stays in the United States.
Venezuela's people are sick of Chavez
I was curious about what's being said in Venezuela, now that Chavez did his Wednesday Live Skit. (Ha! Today on FOX, Schumer - believe it or not - said Chavez is like a guy who drops his drawers in Times Square - lots of attention but you gotta' ignore him.)
Anyway, I found a notable website - VCRISIS by Aleksander Boyd Arregui. And here's his blog as well.
It's worth checking out. Lead article today: Venezuela's people are sick of Chavez
- "Whilst Hugo Chavez makes an ass of himself at the UN, his constituents back home, i.e. those who will decide whether he gets to enjoy that UN seat or not, aren't so enthusiastic about the idea, much less on the spending spree that has led to it.
- More on the site: His election will be decided on local issues and the more I go around the greater the conviction that Chavez is in for a surprise. As Antonio said "este pueblo se canso de los abusos y la irresponsabilidad de Chavez." (In this town I get tired of the abuses and the irresponsibility of Chavez.)
- Mr. Hugo Chávez stated yesterday that he did not “recognize” Felipe Calderón as the legitimate president-elect of Mexico. Well, there is no problem here. Because the only people whose business it is to recognize or not recognize the president-elect are the Mexicans themselves. And Mr. Hugo Chávez is not Mexican.
Chavez BOLTS from US
Hugo storms out of US leaving sulfuric debris. He's outta' here.
Well that was a mess up. Early reports said he cancelled meetings and was leaving. He still deserves the ZOT.
Staying in the UN??
Boy, the events of the last several days sure make you wonder about the UN. Not that we all haven't thought about it before. We financially keep that entity afloat and it's rife with corruption, pretty spineless and paralyzingly inert.
And now we get Ahmadinejad's speech and Chavez's... Hugo calling our President the devil. Schoolyard epithets - not the words of statemen.
This morning I read this from Matt Towery, "But when we've finally reached the point that a room full of international freeloaders are applauding wildly as our president is called the Devil and our demise is predicted, then it's time to seriously reassess whom we want to deal with, in what manner and in what international forum.
Be assured that after this week's antics in New York, more and more Americans will come to believe that expensive, do-nothing diplomatic assemblies such as the United Nations are something we can live without."
Well put.
Live blogging Chavez
Oh my....
- " The Devil was here. The room still smells of sulpher." He's speaking of President Bush.
- People were smiling - have no idea if laughing with him or at him...
- "fascist, genocidal, imperialist, shooing from the hip....."
- People of the world would tell Bush, if they had the chance...
- The UN system is worthless, good once a year to gather, but we have no power now
- Venezuela proposes to reestablish the UN
- expansion of permanent and non-permanent members
- methods to resolve world conflicts
- suppression of anti-democratic notionn of the veto
- immoral veto of US allowed Israel to destroy Lebanon
- strengthen role of Secr. General
- They are the extremists - we have support
- (He's now pitching for his seat on the Security Council - listing all the countries)
- I thank you on behalf of the truth
- need to define the future of the world, new and better world
- the US has already planned and financed a coup in Venezuela
- CIA killers and terrorists - assasinations
- biggest terrorist of this continent spent only a few years in prison and escaped with help of the CIA
- we have given these terrorists protection in the US
- I accuse the US of protecting the terrorists
- The Summit of the non-aligned - I have the resolutions... we have launched this group. Lend momentum to this group. Castro is presiding over the group. Please read this document.
- New era coming - world of peace with a renewed location.
- Maybe a new UN location in Venezuela
- Closed with the smell of the Devil
- lots of applause
Venezuela's fight for U.N. seat nip and tuck
I brought this up a while back - that Chavez is pushing for a voice at the UN - against strong US opposition. This is tied into all his recent travels as he tries to align countries to his side. There's lots of pressure against the S American countries to pick sides - Venzuela or the US.
- Haiti undecided
- Dominican Republic undecided
- Peru, Ecuador and Chile undecided
- Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, and Bolivia all committed to Chavez, and Cuba
- Nearly all 14 U.N. members of the Caribbean Community, or Caricom, are expected to back Chavez.
"Chavez has backing from China, Malaysia and Syria, and told Venezuelan state TV the list is growing to include Arab, African and Western Hemisphere governments plus Russia."
Guatemala is vying for the seat, never having sat on the council before, while Venezuela has had the seat four times in the past. "Guatemala, whose delegations have lobbied in 60 capitals, expects to carry most of Europe as well as some of Asia and Africa, Foreign Minister Gert Rosenthal told the AP.
Guatemala counts Mexico, Colombia and five of its Central American neighbors as expected supporters. A border dispute with the sixth, Caricom member Belize, is part of the reason it is losing the Caribbean.Kofi to Get Involved in Release of Israeli Soldiers
"U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan said Monday that Israel and Hezbollah have agreed to indirect talks for the release of two abducted Israeli soldiers and that he will appoint a mediator. " FOX News
Makes me think of a song I know...
JERUSALEM, Sept 4 (Reuters) - "Israel has asked U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan to help secure the release of two Israeli soldiers seized by Hizbollah, and not to mediate negotiations to free them, Israeli officials said on Monday. Annan said on Monday he would appoint a secret envoy to work for the release of the soldiers. 'A mediator is not needed,' an Israeli government official said. 'The U.N. resolution determines that the soldiers will be released unconditionally. The U.N. Secretary-General will assist and not mediate.' "
In other words, butt out.
